Reviving A Weathered Outdoor Table with WOCA Exterior Oil

In much of Canada we are blessed with 4 distinct seasons; From summer sunshine, to fall leaf litter, winter snow and spring showers. Each of these seasons present their own unique impressions on our lives... and our outdoor furniture.

This outdoor table has endured the ebbs and flows of many a Canadian season and it shows.

Come with us as we revive this dirty grey exterior coffee table into a stunning piece of outdoor furniture!

STEP 1: CELANING THE TABLE

First step was to clean the table, so it is free from the years of impacted dirt and debris. For this step we soaked the wood until it was saturated (a water hose works great!). Then we scrubbed with a brush and some diluted WOCA Exterior Cleaner.

After some good scrubbing with the cleaner it was time to rinse off the table; removing the cleaner along with the dirt and debris it extracted from the wood.

WOCA's Exterior Cleaner is plant safe; when diluted it does not pose a risk to your plants or wildlife. Feel free to scrub down and hose off right on your front lawn, like we did!

Once the water runs clear from the table, set it in a sunny spot to dry for 24-48 hours.

STEP 2: PREPARING THE TABLE

After the table had dried (approx. 1 day), it was time to prepare the freshly cleaned table for an oil treatment. Proper preparation ensures the table is free of blemishes and is ready to accept a new finish.

To prepare, we sanded the raised wood fibers (a result of water getting into the woods pores and causing the grain to "raise/swell"). Using 120 grit sandpaper, we went around the table, sanding until the surface was smooth. Remember to sand with the grain to avoid unsightly scratch patterns.

Remove any sawdust produced during the sanding process prior to applying the oil.

STEP 3: APPLYING THE EXTERIOR OIL FINISH

Now that the table is looking and feeling better, it is time to make sure it is well protected and ready to brace the elements!

For this job we've selected WOCA's Exterior Oil in the colour Teak. Teak is one of our most popular colours as it brings a depth of warmth and tone to any wood!

Stir the oil thoroughly to ensure the pigments are well incorporated; for larger jobs with multiple cans be sure to combine the cans for a more consistent colour.

Before applying the Oil, move the piece of furniture to an area which will not be affected by any oil spilling on it (ie. grass).

Apply an even and thin coat of oil with a brush or WOCA Anza Oil Applicator in the direction of the wood grain. Treat the end grain wood first. The wet oil may have a whiteish cast, but after a few minutes of water evaporation, the wood will appear oiled.

Wipe off any excess oil with clean cotton cloths after no more than 5 minutes. Take particular care in removing excess oil from joints and grooves.

*IMPORTANT: Rags, pads or waste soaked with WOCA oil may self-ignite if improperly discarded. Immediately after use, place all rags and waste in a sealed, water filled bucket for proper disposal. All tools used to apply Exterior Oil can be rinsed out with water to prevent danger of self-ignition.*

It takes 24 to 48 hours for the oil to fully harden, depending on weather conditions and outdoor temperature. The wood must not be exposed to water during this period.

STEP 4: MAINTENANCE

Repeat cleaning and oiling as necessary. Under normal conditions, we recommend this once a year on exposed surface, such as decks and docks. Less exposed areas, such as siding and doors, as needed. Decks and docks can be intermittently washed with WOCA Natural Soap.

STEP 5: ENJOY

As Canadians know the importance of soaking up every second of nice weather, now we can gather around the table with friends and family to admire the beauty of the nature around us, because at WOCA wood care is in our Nature.
